Dr. Vishwapati Trivedi is a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer (1977 batch, Madhya Pradesh cadre) and a veteran economist, administrator, and maritime policy expert who served as Secretary—Ministry of Shipping, Government of India—the apex bureaucratic position overseeing India’s maritime, ports, and logistics policy and governance frameworks. In this capacity, he guided strategic initiatives affecting the nation’s ports, waterways infrastructure, and international shipping operations, contributing to policy formulation and capacity building in one of the most critical sectors of India’s trade and transport ecosystem.

Dr. Trivedi’s academic credentials are notable and multidisciplinary: he holds a B.A. (Honours) and M.Sc. in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and the London School of Economics, respectively, and a Ph.D. in International Economics from Simon Fraser University, Canada. He also has a law degree and is a registered advocate, equipping him with a rich blend of economic, legal, and policy insight that has informed his leadership roles in government and advisory capacities.

Across a government career spanning over four decades, Dr. Trivedi held a variety of senior positions—not only in the Ministry of Shipping but also as Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and other key central ministries—showcasing his versatility as an administrator. Before his appointment to the Shipping Ministry, he led the Inland Waterways Authority of India and was Chairman of the National Shipping Board, roles in which he steered infrastructure development and policy guidance for water transport and port sectors.

His distinguished public-service tenure also includes leadership of major national corporations and international organizations: Dr. Trivedi served as Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines, Joint Managing Director of Air India, and as an Adviser to the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., reflecting his global governance exposure and operational acumen.

Beyond formal appointments, he has contributed to arbitral and advisory bodies—including serving on panels of arbitrators and as a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Council of Arbitration—and has engaged as a visiting faculty at the World Maritime University, underscoring his commitment to academic and sector knowledge dissemination.
